Authorial Photography Project in India (2015) Led by Photographer Fábio Elias

The project began in New Delhi, later moving on to the city of Ziro in northeast India, near the border with China. In this region, we encountered the Apatani tribe, a civilisation descended from primitive and nomadic peoples.

In the past, women in this tribe were considered beautiful and attractive, which unfortunately led to them being kidnapped and subjected to violence. To protect themselves, they developed a tradition of wearing nose adornments and painting their faces with sap from the forest.

In recent times, the tribe has been prohibited from continuing this tradition with young girls due to social bullying. As a result, this cultural practice is at risk of disappearing, as the tribe does not document its history in writing but relies solely on oral transmission.

The journey continued to the desert on the border with Pakistan, then to Jaipur, and concluded in Mumbai.

“The harder the road, the highest the fun.
Nature is Awesome.”

Sore Romano

The wind increased to a howl; the waves dashed their bucklers together; the whole squall roared, forked, and crackled around us like a white fire upon the prairie, in which, unconsumed, we were burning; immortal in these jaws of death! In vain we hailed the other boats; as well roar to the live coals down the chimney of a flaming furnace as hail those boats in that storm. Meanwhile the driving scud, rack, and mist, grew darker with the shadows of night; no sign of the ship could be seen.
